Dear Friends,

This is a very old and persistent debate.
This is also a false question, because something or someone had to create and design science and implement science–and in truth, there is one God who not only invented and implemented science, but is within and beyond science. I'm a physician, and M.D., a so-called man of science. Do I believe science has validity? Of course! I also believe that the God I know and love and trust created and implemented science, and as such is also beyond science and not obligated to science. He has every authority to work within or beyond science at his discretion. As I talk to him, in what we commonly refer to as prayer, I have an invitation to ask him to work both within and beyond science for any particular situation. I have witnessed his amazing work within science, and I have witnessed remarkable things beyond science.
A limited view of science, a humanistic view of science, is so limited that it cannot ask the big questions such as where did energy and matter and space and time come from, and what lies beyond our universe? Anyone with any intellectual honesty will look around at the world, at its organization and function and conclude that it cannot be an accident, and certainly life cannot be an accident. There is no explanation for even something as mundane as goodness, outside of it being created. Goodness is a gift that was endowed to us by a Creator (as that man of science Thomas Jefferson would state). What could possibly lie beyond time, and where did time itself come from? From our limited perspective, everything seems to have a beginning and an end-not only our lives, but even things that appear stable such as our sun (which will be gone in a few short billion years!). It is difficult for us to think of something or someone that has no beginning and no end, that is beyond time and indeed the creator of time. But that's who God claims to be, and who he has revealed himself to be to us.
Every person in every society that refuses to seriously look at and deal with the issue of God and what he says about himself and about us, has ended in disaster, both personally and collectively. The most successful human existence, again, both personally and collectively, has occurred when people acknowledge their limitations, their origins from God, their responsibility towards him and the fellow human beings that God also created. Isn't it ironic that so many who dismiss the idea of God, substitute for the true God things that are so not God? They try to create a god-be it the earth, environmentalism, health, political correctness, or forced social equality-and the list goes on and on. The simple reality of a God who is, and who always has been, who revels himself-in his creation, in words spoken to those who listen to his language, by the life of his son as part of himself became one of us to save us (his fallen rebellious creation), and finally giving his Spirit to live in and speak directly to any of us who will listen, is "self evident" (to again use a phrase from Jefferson) to those with "eyes to see and ears to hear" (to quote the Son of God).
I have no power to force anyone to see the truth as it has been revealed to me, but I pray with everything in me that my words and my witness will help someone somewhere to open their eyes to the massive awesome beautiful truth of the reality of God that is within and around us all, whether we see it and acknowledge it or not.
May God bless you, and keep you. May his face shine upon you, and give you peace, now and forevermore,
Amen.
